St Aloysius Church

Project Background: ST Aloysius is a Roman Catholic Church in the Garnethill area of Glasgow Scotland. Construction of the Church began 4th October 1908 and the main kirk of the building opened 6th February 1910. The bell towers were constructed 1910. The Church is a category A listed building and consists of a red sandstone.

The Works: Conservation Masonry Limited was employed as the Main Contractor to coordinate and orchestrate the restoration and structural works to the full height of the church tower. The tower required a full 21 lift scaffold enclosing all four sides from the base of the tower to the top of the finial cross. Once the scaffold works were complete the Church then required extensive site surveys to fully ascertain the restoration requirements and then this allowed Conservation Masonry Limited to manage the client’s expectations. The contract duration lasted 28 weeks and contained many different integrated work packages with the aim to preserve and protect the tower for many future generations for a place of Holy worship. The summary of the works carried out are as detailed below:

Stone restoration, consolidation, stone carving and conservation works to the Church spire and tower.

Joinery works to include for two new internal timber floors, new timber access hatches and louvre restoration works

Stone Type: The stone type used for the restoration works was Locharbriggs.
